Blah

Life has never been fair.

But since when has that stopped anyone from whining?

I’m sick, sick, sick. An upper respiratory infection that I don’t know how I contracted (I’m looking at you, Jersey Shore) has left me hacking it for the past few days.

On top of that, I’ve gotten slammed with news at work that puts my position in a weird place, me in a sticky situation, and all sorts of fun stuff. Oh, and I ripped my favorite jeans. Like, really badly ripped them at the knee. No, not in a cool way.

But at least I’m on page 30 of my novel. And I wasn’t the one that passed the dinosaur. (Hooray!)

Okay, life is not fair, but still, it’s pretty great.

If you like, I’ll start posting bits of the book?

I would love to read parts of the book, I bet we'll have more productive comments than the bitches in your MB class...

K, WHY WOULD YOU START POSTING BITS OF YOUR BOOK? This drives me insane! I know that it is so tempting because you want people to read it and you want feedback--I want it all the time and that is why I blog--but to post bits of your novel on a public site? Why? Is your intention to never try to find an agent with this project? No agent is going to want to pick up a book that everyone has already read on your site.

So not trying to be mean at all, just trying to say that you must protect yourself. Everyone wants to be a writer--but to be one you must have a business sense as well. Don't give it away for free! (and don't hate me for this comment--This is coming from a good place--I promise)

Yeah--as much as I want to read it, your writing here is just fine to tide me over and then I'll BUY your book.

Actually, Lynn makes a good point...

I agree. As much as I want to read it, Lynn's point is an excellent one.

Hi guys,

Because of Lynn's excellent point I will not be posting my book, even though I'm dying to hear if you all think it's halfway anything. Thank you Lynn for pulling me back from selling purgatory!

I was very worried you would be offended!! So glad you have taken the advice. I worked in publishing for several years and it is a vicious world--nothing like this friendly blog land we have here! Good luck to you with your manuscript--I will be looking forward to some announcements, but no passages.

Think of your novel like one of those little expanding sponges...it looks like nothing at first, then grows and swells and flourishes, and when the time is right...it will pass into the world.

:P

Lynn-
I would never be offended by your comments--I need all the advice I can get, and I really appreciate your intentions. Sigh--why can't the publishing world be like this friendly blog world :(

david--lol and ewww.

There are counterexamples to Lynn's post. Or at least one that I know of: Cherie Priest, whose first novel has done pretty well and was first got some exposure on LiveJournal after her first publishing deal turned out not-so-great.

And, I mean, William Gibson's been posting bits of his current work in progress lately. But he's William Gibson and will have no trouble finding someone interested in publishing the finished work.

As much as I'd like to see it, I'd think twice before posting bits. The above examples are very much exceptions to the rule as far as I can tell.

am torn. on one hand I'd love to read it, but on the other, "why give away for free what you can be paid to do?"

here's what you can do: instead of posting bits of your novel, write a novella about the 'passing of the dinosaur.' that will keep us amused!

At least you didn't pass the dinosaur. Sorry to hear you were sick. Hope all is better now.
Page 30 is great! Keep writing, I'm sure it's going to be great.

30 pages? Great! Let us know when you get to another landmark.
