My new boss?

In an effort to bolster my bank account so I may continue writing and apply to grad schools and sell my book, damnit, I am applying for part-time work. I sent a deluge of emails out recently for administrative jobs, or filing, or assistant work. I've done it before and I'm fairly capable and I won't be feeling the need to do anything but my job to its best (not wanting to try to get the boss's job I mean, I just want to be in a submissive role and have a steady paycheck and keep my nose clean).

So check out this email I just got back, in answer to my posting my resume. I have bolded my favorite parts. Spelling and spacing errors have been left as is.

Hello,

Thanks for applying for the post, I quite I appreciate it? I received and read your e-mail and it's reasonable and acceptable. So I will give this a go"
I'm looking for someone that can be trusted and reliable to work very well and good understanding person.
This position is home-based and flexible, working with me is basically about instructions and following them, my only fear is that I may come at you impromptu sometimes, so I need someone who can be able to meet up with my irregular timings. As my assistant, your activities amongst other things will include;*Running personal errands, supervisions and monitoring. Scheduling programmes, flights and keeping me up to date with them. Acting as an alternative telephone correspondence while I'm away. Making regular contacts and drop-offs on my behalf. Handling and monitoring some of my financial activities..
Basic wage is $500 a week . I'm sure you'll understand I tend to have a very busy schedule at t his point, as I am presently in Canada, I will be back in Three Weeks.

I think you're the right person for this post , Please note that this position is not office based for now because of my frequent travels and tight schedules, it's a part-time, work from home basis and the flexibility means that there will be busier weeks than others, so it's a little difficult judging the exact number of hours you'll be doing per week. If you can manage your time
properly, this job may even give you some extra while you do something else on the side. As I have said, I'd want us to get a head start with things as soon as possible. I do have a pile up of work and a number of unattended chores which you can immediately assist me with, I hope we can meet up with the workload eventually.

Permit me to use the coming week to test your efficiency and diligence towards all this, also to work out your time schedule and fit it to mine.. I really need to find the perfect person for this job, I'm confident you can take up the challenge and on the long run we should have a relatively sound working relationship between us.. I'm online most of the time as I am hard of hearing so
I prefer we contact each other through E-mails,
but if there is need for me to call, I will be glad to do that. I am glad you are willing to work with me and i promise to be a good boss. I am also glad on the commitment in working. I have been checking my files and what i would want you to do for me this week is to run some errands out to some of the orphanage home, I do that every month. The fund s will be in form of Cashier Check/Money Order and it will be sent over to you from one of my clients and i have some list to email you once you received the funds,You will make some arrangements by buying some stuff for the kids in the nearest store around you so you can mail them out. I will get you more information on that, I will like you to get back to me with your
Contact Details such as.

Once I have received your contact information, I will get back to you with the task for this week,Understand you will also be paid as well as its important for me to

make the necessary steps
before i get back from my business trip back to the states. Hope I am clear with that.

Get back as soon as possible..

From reading that "email," I have no idea whether you will be an admin, a nanny, or a victim of a banking scam.

I applied for the same position and received the same email from the guy. Is it legit or a scam email like most craigslist postings?

I received the same communication from a person claiming to be "Richard Howerton"; A few of the details of this Craigslist ad have been changed, but it's the same format and wording for the most part. Ie. Instead of "being out of the country for three weeks in Canada" it may read "...in Australia."

I do not understand the nature of this scam as the information collected is readily available on most social networking sites or a simple google search or white pages. I suspect this is data-mining for a more-sophisticated identity-theft or banking scam (ie. information is being gathered through other means in-conjunction with...)

Did anyone get a request for further information beyond (see below):

I will get you more information on that,I will like you to get back to
me with your Contact Details such as:

First Name
Last Name
Street Address
City, State, Zip Code
Cell Phone Number
Home Phone Number
Sex
Current Occupation
Alternate Email Address

It's a paid courier job by the Russian mafia. They get you to make arrangements for them so they can do their dirty work in the states without a hitch.

Just got the same email in response to similar "keep my nose clean" job applications I sent out. Glad you posted, 'cause I was really suspicious of it.

Thanks for looking out!

Yep. Just got the same type of thing... from Steve / Jillian. It just kept getting worse and worse as I read. I guess I should be honored though.. mine said $700 per week! HA! I think maybe the scam lies in the fake checks you will be receiving and then trying to cash. The checks would bounce and by that time you would have already spent your own money on the stuff they requested of you. Not sure, but most scams with cashiers checks work that way.

wow. this is unbelievable. i was really pumped up when i got 2 emails saying they were interested in me. i think i picked up on it when i realized the two letters were pretty much a replica of each other. thanks for officially clearing things up!

I received this same email and was very suspicious of it, so I copied it and searched in Google. Thanks for posting this, because it confirmed the fraud for me. I'm not sure what kind of scam this is, but I'm glad I was saved from revealing any further information about myself.

Anonymous said...

Yeah received it myself, from Walter Riley this time, apparently he's in Australia lol.

Surprised they didn't just ask for bank details up front, it's not like they've particularly made an effort to seem legit.

Yes, I applied to a personal assistant job on craigslist and got almost that exact email.

My "boss" was originally from Canada, but grew up in the US and was currently traveling in Australia.

It tipped me off that his email address was to Christian Powell, but his given yahoo ID was cpalmer, and he signed the email "chris"

Received the same email 3/18/10! The post was for a Chiropractic Office Assistant..knew it was fishy when he said he was away in China. Thanks for posting these so I knew I was right. SOB! Love how people pry on those looking for means to an end! This person posed as a doctor!
(from the email) "I'm Robert Filter, 34 yrs of age, I'm a doctor by profession and I have been pretty successful in a handful of ventures I get involved in, from the Angel Investment Network in Canada and United State to various welfare and community service programs. I most very often get my hands occupied, so it is imperative for me to
have a worthy driver who can help and keep me up to date with my activities"
Good Luck All!

I just got the same response. If anyone finds a way for us to report this guy (mine was Robert Filter, away in China for Three Weeks), drop a line. I'm sorry to the last poster who was sucked in by this crap...it's certainly tempting in this job market.

I received the same email from a Frank Moore. Thanks for posting. I'll be sure to block him on my email list.

Just got the same response...wow, this sucks that you can't find a job on a job site!! Annoyed!! The away on business in China, and please run an errand to an orphanage out of town?? Really? So you can torture me and not return my body to my parents..no thanks!! Glad someone started this blog though!!

I got the guy to call me, in an effort to prove it wasn't a scam. The number he used had the Country Code of Nigeria (234). Full number was 234-708-782-2370 if somebody wants to troll that guy back.

I was really curious if the email I got back was a scam, now I know not to do craigs list anymore. now what to do about a job :(

I got the same email from replying to an ad for an Administrative Assistant(Austin) on Craigslist. The body of the email was the same as yours except for this part. This time he was a different guy with a different position.

"I am Alton Paul Burton , 41yrs of age, I'm a lawyer by profession and I have been pretty successful in a handful of ventures I get involved in; from the Angel Investment Network in Canada and United State to various welfare and community service programs".

It is such a shame what this world has become.

I have a friend that has many degrees and he's really intelligent so he went to a company to apply for a job but he wasn't hire just because the interviewer doesn't thought that he will be able to do it.

Yeah, the language used is not befitting of an educated person, much less, a supposed doctor. The whole thing seems fishy and it is sad that the guy is posing like this to innocent people attempting to find employment. Keep your radars out there everyone!! These guys are everywhere!!

I got the same email from Chris Boyd but this time he is in Germany my salary he stated was 300 pounds a week.I typed a phrase to understand the meaning of it in the google and came to know the reality. thanks for posting it there. Hey guys can't we do anything to catch them and handover to the police.its harassing job search in one way and such scams on the other.
