The Blahs

You know the feeling right? The one in which you're sitting at your desk or on your couch and as you look at that paper/script/homework to read for the tenth time or as you flip through the channels or look at your empty wallet/purse/online bank statement and sigh, you suddenly just shout out, "BOOOOOOOOOOOORIIIING!"

I'm feeling that. So much lately. And of course, for no good reason. When I am overcome with thoughts of blah, I like to plan. So below, my course of action.

The fabulous things I will do to combat tedium, boredom, and a rare form of cabin fever that involves my cube, a view of the next building, the interior of the same restaurants, clubs, and classrooms:

-Take a trapeze lesson on the Hudson River. I just signed up.

-Have lunch at the Mermaid Inn in the middle of a weekday. Because it’s right next door to my apartment and I’ve always wanted to blow off a Thursday just to putt around my neighborhood.

-Go to Miami with my girlfriends for the weekend. I want/need/have to have a girl’s vacation full of shoes, tanning oil, and white wine by the pool.

-Blow any extra money this month on perishables and temporaries: avocados, champagne, pedicures, meditation techniques, martinis with blue cheese stuffed olives, plays, indie concerts, art exhibits, flicks at the Sunshine theater.

That’s what I’ve got so far, but I could really use some more. What do you do to make life interesting every day?

I'm really feeling you on the whole blowing off money ordeal.

One thing that I've always wanted to do, and promised myself I would, once I got older and had all this extra cash, was to go and buy boxes of Lucky Charms, and eat a bowl of nothing but marshmallows for breakfast.

Or what about giving somebody a makeover? Like a poor sap you meet on the street or something. Control their hair, their clothes, their everything! With your style and all that power imagine the possibilities.

Oh I know!! Start a ridiculous fight with your boyfriend that lasts two weeks and ends in a silent cold war! That would definitely make life interesting! No? Not your style? Oh well...I tried.

Draw in a museum on a Sunday. Get a sketch pad, sit in the statue garden. Go for tea somewhere fancy. Sundays at The Plaza has an amazing afternoon tea for $35 (crustless sandwiches, scones, and pots of tea!). Takashimaya has tea too, but I opt for the English kind. Pinky out and all.

Friday night. Nuyorican poets cafe (nuyorican.org) has a fun poetry slam. Very New York. Grab fresh (and cheap) pasta at Max's before you go.

Be a tourist in your own city. Take your camera, a red double decker bus, and take photos in Chinatown, get a lobster tail at Ferraro's in Little Italy.

The Bronx Zoo. Go. Bring a camera.

MY GOD GIRL... Get thee to Brandy's Piano Bar! I know it's a hike... all the way to the upper east side, but it's worth it. They have a web site. You must must go. Bring friends... or your man.

Get a massage or (my favorite) de-stressing acupuncture. Go to the acupuncturist at Exhale Spa on CPS. You will feel like a new woman. Take a class on something you never would take, like buddhist throat-singing, knife skills in the kitchen, metalworking or something else from the School of Visual Arts.

I agree with the tourist idea. I love to grab my camera and just walk, snapping photos of whatever catches my eye.

If you don't want to go to a salon, get yourself a ton of facial masks, conditioners, bubble bath, etc., and do a spa day at home. You'll feel so refreshed.

Get some tea that you really enjoy, a good cup, and make a little ritual of sitting back, getting comfortable, and indulging yourself-- no tv, but maybe your favorite music, book, or whatever. Especially as it gets chilly, there is nothing more comforting that your hot drink of choice.

ps- first time commenter... I really like your blog!

My favorite NYC activites used to include bombing around the Chelsea art galleries, the Met, the Moma, Landmark, Sunshine, aLife, The Reed Space, Washington Square Park followed by Mamouds, talking to the geniuses who work in "Rebel Rebel", listening to the water lap against the Dumbo coastline, checking out "Shoot the Freak" on the Coney Island boardwalk, the occasional, "Hey you home? I´m right downstairs." phone call, all fueled by an iPod and camera.

The camera thing is good. Concentrate on one thing ie the colour red, or texture. Look up artists on the website from a country you've always wanted to visit - research the stunning black and white photography out there.Manipulate your own photography. You're a creative person! Extend the boundaries of looking at things. Look at the way OTHER people look at things.Read up on Candy Jernigan. Now THAT's something different!!!!
