Baby Art

There was a time, between the ages of eight and eleven, that my parents thought, for one shining moment, I might be a prodigy.

Parents always think that.

Usually it means nothing. For me it meant art lessons.

Here are my "baby paintings" -- paintings, drawings, and etchings I did under the tutelage of a talented, tortured artist who covered her walls in beautiful, terrifying and enormous paintings of war and suffering and fire. Great way for a fourth grader to spend her Monday and Wednesday afternoons right?

Please tell me I didn't peak at ten. That would be a new low...

Did you really paint those in fourth grade? If so, I'm impressed. What are you painting lately?

Wow. If you did those in fouth grade, I'm wondering what your work is like today...

Those are amazing. They remind me of the art work in the film Off the Map.

I love, love, love, the sea one! I'm SO serious! Like, if I saw it at a street fair or something I would totally buy it! I really like your use of color...and the way it looks really child-like makes it even more precious...you're not thinking of selling it are you?

i knew somebody once who painted almost exactly like this as a child. i have never forgotten what they looked like, they burned an image in the brain. i dont know if it was the talent of the painter or the color choices made as a child, but i can still picture them perfectly.

Thanks for the encouragement guys :) I did do these between 8-11, but I had a very good teacher and I attribute it to her. For my more recent pieces, check out some of the past blog entries like http://almostliterary.blogspot.com/2006/02/art.html and http://almostliterary.blogspot.com/2006/03/art-3.html .

And dt--my mom's got a lock on them all, though your interest in buying is unbelievably flattering!
